British countertenor Alexander Simpson is a versatile young singer and actor who enjoys performing a wide range of repertoire and styles.
Recent operatic roles include Athamas Semele (Royal Academy of Music), Arsace Partenope (Iford Arts Festival), Arcane Teseo (London Handel Festival), Refugee Flight (Royal Academy Opera), Lilas Pastia Carmen (Royal Academy Opera) and Juno Semele (Cambridge University Opera Society). He will be performing in Purcell’s Fairy Queen with Waterperry Opera Festival in July.
Alexander won the Accademia Vivaldi Scholarship at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in April and the Rosenblatt Recitals Singing Prize in 2016. He has performed at various venues in the UK, including Kings Place, Cadogan Hall and St George’s Hanover Square, as well as in Europe and is currently collaborating with ArtHouse Jersey.
He has a particularly keen interest in the works of JS Bach and was a Runner-up in the London Bach Society’s Bach Singers Prize 2017. He is a scholar of the prestigious Royal Academy of Music/Kohn Foundation Bach series and has worked with some of the world’s leading baroque musicians. He appears regularly as a soloist for JS Bach’s St. John Passion (BWV 245), St Matthew Passion (BWV 244), Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), Easter Oratorio (BWV 249), Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11) and many cantatas, including BWV 170, 82, 54, 53 and 169.
Alexander read Music at St John’s College, Cambridge where he was a choral scholar under Andrew Nethsingha. He went on to the Royal Academy of Music where he was awarded a full scholarship and graduated with a DipRAM for an outstanding final recital. He has just finished Royal Academy Opera and studies with Michael Chance, Caitlin Hulcup and Anna Tilbrook.
Alexander is a grateful recipient of the ABRSM Scholarship Award, the Violet Irene Strutton Award, the Philip Hattey Scholarship, the Leverhulme Trust Postgraduate Scholarship, the Steel Trust Award and the Josephine Baker Trust.
