Alexander Simpson

Countertenor

Praised for his ‘extraordinary stage presence’ and ‘sublimely melodic voice’, Alexander Simpson is a versatile young countertenor who has been earmarked as ‘the voice of his generation’ (The Times).

 

Notable recent operatic roles include Farnace Il Farnace (Prague State Opera), Tolomeo Giulio Cesare (Warsaw Chamber Opera), Ottone Agrippina (Teatro San Carlo) Ottone L’incoronazione di Poppea (Teatro La Fenice), Nireno Giulio Cesare (English Touring Opera), Cowslip Fairy Queen (Waterperry Opera Festival ), Athamas Semele (Royal Academy of Music), Arsace Partenope (Iford Arts Festival), Arcane Teseo (London Handel
Festival) and Refugee Flight (Royal Academy Opera).

 

Alexander’s artistry has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Fondazione Cesti Opera Fellowship, the Premio Accademia Monteverdi, the Accademia Hasse Scholarship, the Accademia Vivaldi Scholarship at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, the Rosalind Armstrong Prize and the Tony Lowrey Audience Prize in the Hurn Court Opera Singing Competition and the Rosenblatt Recitals Singing Prize.


In addition to his career as a performer, Alexander frequently leads masterclasses at conservatoires and theatres across Europe, helping the next generation of singers explore Baroque musicality, stagecraft and freedom of expression.


An alumnus of St John’s College, Cambridge, Alexander was a choral scholar under Andrew Nethsingha before moving to the Royal Academy of Music where he was awarded a full scholarship and graduated with a DipRAM for an outstanding final recital. He continued his training with Royal Academy Opera, studying under Michael Chance, Caitlin Hulcup and
Anna Tilbrook.
